We are a couple from Sydney and have been together for about 16 years (married for 13) with no children. We have decided to give up the regular tedium of work and take a year off exploring Australia. We are a bit unusual in that we are too young to retire permanently, so not exactly grey nomads. But we are also too old to be backpackers, which is the other main group one would expect to be doing something like this. However, we are probably travelling more in the style of grey nomads than backpackers so maybe we fit a bit more in that category. Also there is a bit of grey hair starting to appear and Steve needed to get reading glasses the other day.
We have always enjoyed travelling. We have done several road trips around Australia in the past just with a 4WD vehicle and hiking tent. However Australia is a big country so by the time we got to where we were going, it was always been a bit rushed to see everything in the short time available when taking short breaks from work. Every trip has been full of compromises where we have to miss out on sights, or do the short walk to the look-out rather than the full day walk. So to really enjoy what each part of Australia has to offer we would need to head out for 2 or 3 months on each road trip. This was not exactly feasible in Steve’s job in the corporate world, so we have essentially decided to take a break from work and do a few road trips back to back. In the past travelling with car and tent we were able to get just about everywhere and we are a bit worried that a caravan will limit us. At the same time we didn’t like the idea of setting up a tent every night for a year. Our preference is a wild camp that we have to ourselves. We hope to be able to do this as much as possible and hope the caravan does not limit us too much. We will have to wait and see!
